The Water Framework Directive Information Centre has been established at the Foundation for Water Research and is a central source of information about the Directive.

It helps a wide range of interested parties understand what the Directive involves and raises awareness of how it will lead to an even cleaner and healthier water environment.

The objective is to complement the activities of the key organisations, such as government and the environmental regulators, who are closely involved in the implementation of the Directive.

Background

The Water Framework Directive is currently being implemented in the UK and across the EU. It has as its main aim the management and improvement of the water environment. A key requirement of the Directive (Article 14 – Public Information and Consultation) encourages the active involvement of interested parties in the implementation of the Directive.

Interested parties include those organisations which have the necessary powers and procedures and can deliver components of a river basin management strategy; those individuals and organisations who make use of, and have an impact on, the water environment; and those who might benefit from improvements to the water environment.

What does the Information Centre do?

The Information Centre is a central source of information about the Directive. It helps a wide range of interested parties understand what the Directive involves and raises awareness of how it will lead to an even cleaner and healthier water environment. • Providing information at the national level to support the implementation of the Directive via its website, newsletters, leaflets and displays
  • Providing links through its website to important sources of information and advice
  • Encouraging involvement in local environmental issues associated with the Directive
  • Bringing groups together to address issues of concern
  • Providing information for schools, colleges and universities to help in understanding the challenges of water management
