Ecologic Newsletter
No. 62, April 2008

This month’s issue includes a report on an online study into climate change induced water stress and its impacts on natural and managed ecosystems. The study explores which ecosystems will be most impacted and analyses how the effects of climate change act as causes of additional emissions, thereby reinforcing global warming in a positive feedback loop. There is also an online study into the analysis of the Tisza River Basin in 2007. The Tisza River Basin Analysis Report is an important step towards the preparation of the Tisza river basin management plan under the EU Water Framework Directive.

ENCORA e-News
Issue 18, April 2008
 

The ENCORA objective is to facilitate and create new opportunities for sharing knowledge and experience on coastal issues in Europe. This electronic newsletter has news and updates on the activities of the network. Every issue will also contain a section with news about national networks or ICZM related topics in the network countries.

The EU funding of ENCORA ends in 2009, but the coastal networks and the different services created by ENCORA will remain, at least in countries where they are supported by coastal and marine-related institutions. The key topic in this issue is Coastal Wiki, a tool for realising the ENCORA objectives. It reports that the number of Coastal Wiki articles and definitions increases from day to day (presently almost 900; the latest addition is an inventory of coastal dunes in Europe) and a few hundred coastal professionals visit the Coastal Wiki each day and this number is steadily growing.

EUCC Coastal News

The newsletter LIFEnews, issued every month, features information on the LIFE programme, presents successful projects and identifies events and publications linked to the programme.  As a part of the programme LIFE projects support the implementation of EU water policy.  The April 2008 issue features a report about LIFE supporting Malta’s first coastal nature reserve.  Funding under the LIFE-third country strand has helped Maltese partners to establish the country’s first fully functional coastal nature reserve.

RISKBASE Newsletter
Issue 2, May 2008

This is the newsletter of the European project RISKBASE (Risk Based Management of River Basins).  The key article by Jos Brils, RISKBASE coordinator, is on Ecosystem services.  In addition, there are reports on project’s workshops and conferences held during the last year. The main focus of the cross-cutting issues workshop, held on 3-4 December 2007 in Venice, Italy was on the topics ‘Science-policy interfacing’ and ‘Resilience thinking’.

At the RISKBASE conference and 1st WP4 workshop on risk assessment in European river basins, organised by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research-UFZ in Germany in November 2007, more than 100 experts from 20 countries presented their view in 38 lectures and discussed the available approaches for risk assessment and risk-based management in the context of the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.

Water Alternatives

Water Alternatives (WaA) is a new publication which will be published three times a year.  The Inaugural issue will be released on the 1st of June 2008. WaA is an interdisciplinary journal addressing the full range of issues that water raises in contemporary societies.  Its ambition is to provide space for alternative and critical thinking on such issues. WaA welcomes contributions that address any dimensions of water resources development, management and use and their relations with society and the environment.
