ART E-Newsletter Association of River Trusts
e- newsletter 18, March 2010

    This quarterly e-newsletter of the Association of Rivers Trusts (ART) has been created, to serve the Rivers Trust movement and provide a medium for the circulation and free exchange of knowledge and information. This issue includes information on new projects, workshop and training courses:

  • Living North Sea Project - ART is to be lead partner of the project, which brings together 15 partners from 7 countries in the North Sea Region to address the problems facing sea trout, eel and other migratory fish.
  • The WATER Project (Wetted Land: the Assessment, Techniques and Economics of Restoration) - Led by Westcountry Rivers Trust, the project is part funded by the EU Interreg IVA France (Channel) England programme and will identify and “sell” the benefits of permanently protecting wetted land within a river catchment to those who stand to gain financially from such changes.
  • Additional Defra Funding Boost for River Improvement Projects - The Environment Agency has provided guidance on the priorities within the three Water Framework Directive related work packages.
  • PINPOINT – Information on a series of free training courses designed to help Rivers Trusts tackle diffuse pollution in their catchments.

Chemicals Regulation Directorate (Pesticides) Newsletter

Danube Watch
Issue 1, 2010, 16 pages

  • Danube Watch is the official magazine of ICPDR, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River. Danube Watch enhances regional cooperation and information sharing on sustainable water management and environmental protection in the Danube River Basin. It reports on current issues affecting the Danube Basin, and on action taken to deal with challenges in the river basin. This issue reports on the Ministerial Meeting on 16 February 2010 where ministers from all Danube countries approved the Danube River Basin Management Plan. Other articles include Ecotoxicology – science contributes to water management issues, Encouraging young people to dive in to water management, The Drava River – a flowing controversy and The future of water – consequences of climate change in Central Europe.

  • Euro-Mediterranean Information System on the know-how in the Water Sector. The Headlines report that the IV Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Water, 13 April 2010 in Barcelona ended in failure. Talks aimed at adopting a long-term strategy for water in the Mediterranean failed last 13 April in Barcelona. Although an agreement was reached on technical aspects of the Strategy, this document could not be adopted because of a lack of agreement on the denomination of “Occupied Territories”. It is now up to the heads of the 43 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean to decide on the next steps.   • The newsletter LIFEnews, issued every month by LIFE Unit, DG Environment, European Commission, features information on the LIFE programme, presents successful projects and identifies events and publications linked to the programme.  As a part of the programme LIFE projects support the implementation of EU water policy.  This month’s LIFEnews focuses on the publication of the latest European Red lists of endangered species. It highlights the threats facing Europe’s butterflies, dragonflies and beetles and presents a number of LIFE projects that have been working to improve the conservation status of these species.

  • UKWIR facilitates collaborative research for UK water operators.  The latest News issue reports on several workshops and current UKWIR projects, including the following:
  • Impact of Urban Creep on Sewerage Systems. The increase in impermeable surfaces in urban areas will impact on design of future sewerage systems.
  • Sustaining phosphorus - Global mineral sources of phosphorous (P) are becoming depleted and costs are rising substantially. Good management practice is required to protect watercourses from phosphorus run-off and sensible policies are required to efficiently utilise phosphorus stored in soils to meet crop needs.
  • Targeting water efficiency. From next April water companies will be subject to water efficient targets set by Ofwat. The UKWIR project Cost Benefit of Baseline Water Efficient Activities has been undertaken so that a common robust method can be used when completing water saving figures in the June Return to Ofwat.
