Pressures and Impacts

As required by Article 5 of the WFD, SEPA has produced detailed assessments of the pressures and impacts on the water environment in the Scotland River Basin District and (jointly with the Environment Agency) in the Solway Tweed River Basin District. The Environment Agency has undertaken a similar assessment for the Northumbria River Basin District.

These assessments can be found at:

The Scottish Office has issued a draft policy statement setting out principles for the objective setting process in the River Basin Management Plan which takes into account the pressures and impacts in Scotland. The document ‘Implementing the Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003: Draft Policy Statement – Principles for Setting Objectives for the River Basin Management Plan’ (issued 18/10/2006) can be found on the Scottish Office website:

In 2007, SEPA will publish a Significant Water Management Issues (SWMI) Report. Among other things, this will set out the results of work SEPA has been doing since 2004 to refine its initial risk assessments.

As a part of the river basin planning cycle each River Basin District is required to produce a Summary of SWMI by end of July 2007. A 6-months’ public consultation on SWMI will start in summer 2007.
