CONFERENCE ON INTEGRATED RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT UNDER THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE
Action programmes, adaptation to climate change, inspiration

Lille, France, 26 – 28 April 2010

The conference, sponsored by the RSC, SCI and the Institute of Water, reviewed technical challenges faced by Member States, stakeholder organisations and scientists, while developing the first River Basin Management Plan under the WFD.   It  focused on aspects of integration, looking at the way cross-sectoral and multidisciplinary co-operation has developed, and how emerging issues such as adaptation to climate changes will be considered in the future.

WORLD WATER DAY WORKSHOP
Hydrology, Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) river basins in Scotland

UNESCO Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science at the University of Dundee hosted this interactive online event supported by Be2camp. The University of Dundee led discussions about the Tweed; and the Macaulay Institute provided comparisons regarding the Dee. There was also an international comparison of the Tweed and Thames. The focus throughout was HELP and the interface between land use and water management, and crystallising a stakeholder-driven agenda for effective river basin management in Scotland.

THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE: WHAT ARE THE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

This SCI, Fera and CIWEM Tyne & Humber Branch event focused on business opportunities around achieving compliance with the WFD. The challenges were discussed first, including an overview of the regulations; the Humber River Basin Management Plan and some of the challenges that still need to be addressed to meet the objectives of WFD and the opportunities that they bring; plant protection products; reservoir catchments and river basin management. Opportunities for business, including instrumentation and contamination control were presented in the afternoon.

  • World Wetlands Day
    Peterborough, 02 - 03 February 2010

    The objectives of the event were to:
    • To mark World Wetlands Day and use it to take a look at wetland conservation in the UK
    • To look at the similarities and differences in taking action for wetland biodiversity in three very different habitats coastal, lowland and upland wetlands
    • To explore the way that policies, research and practical action need to be joined together to help deliver the most effective outcomes
    • To bring together the wetland constituency so that it can meet and share experiences in a variety of settings, not least by looking at two very significant case examples in terms of the Great Fen and Paxton pits.
