EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES
Madrid, Spain, 15 –16 January 2008
(Posted 28 May 2008)

Invasive alien species, whether introduced intentionally or not, represent one of the main threats to biodiversity, causing significant negative effects not only on ecosystems, but also to the health, economy and common wellbeing.

The presence in Europe of these species has continued to increase exponentially since the last century. The main aim  of the conference was to act as a meeting place and a forum for the exchange of experiences and knowledge among all the parties involved in this problem in order to facilitate debate and obtain ideas and recommendations that would contribute to the advancement of European and national policies on invasive alien species. It also aimed to contribute to increasing awareness about this issue.

The conference papers, conclusions and final declaration are available on the non-profit making organization Fundación Biodiversidad’s website:  (http://www.fundacion-biodiversidad.info/eei/)

USING RESEARCH TO INFORM INTEGRATED CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT
CSC Catchment Science Centre Third Conference
Sheffield, 6 February 2008

Across the world new initiatives for the joint management of water and land resources are being developed, and the environment is increasingly at the focus of sustainable development. The approaches are sometimes collectively termed Integrated Catchment Management (ICM). The conference provided an opportunity to hear about some of the existing work being undertaken at the CSC and elsewhere, and to discuss the support that science and academia can provide for anyone involved in land and water management from both public and private sectors, and academics interested in contributing to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.

The conference presentations are available on the Sheffield University website:
