SHORT COURSES IN WATER RESOURCES

The School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University offers a range of courses for study by professionals across the Civil Engineering, Geomatics and Geoscience fields. In the sector of Water resources the courses include the following:

  • Asset Management of Flood Defences and Dams
  • Catchment and River Modelling
  • Coastal Flood Risk
  • Groundwater modelling
  • Integrated River Basin Management

COLLECTING & IDENTIFYING SEAWEEDS

A British Phycological Society field course. This 3-day course, comprising of a mix of lab and field work, is now in its 5th year.  With limited numbers the course has been designed to cater for those interested in seaweeds at almost any level of expertise.

UNESCO-IHE ONLINE COURSES

The UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education is an international institute for water education that was established in 2003. UNESCO-IHE also offers online courses in a number of topics of interest in the water sector. It allows participants anywhere in the world to learn at their own convenience, and apply their newly acquired knowledge in their working environment. The online courses are intended for professionals working in public and private institutions, NGOs, and academic institutions, and are suitable for those with families who want to upgrade their skills from the comfort of their own home or office. A typical course covers a four-month period, and requires around eight hours of study per week (total study load 140 hours).

The courses, starting on 1 March 2008, include topics such as Integrated River Basin Management, Water and Environmental Law and Policy, Wetlands for Water Management, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Water and Climate Change, Cleaner Production and the Water Cycle and Wetland Management.

CIRIA TRAINING

CIRIA is a member-based research and information organisation dedicated to improvement in the construction industry. It is experienced in delivering a number of training courses, notably in SUDS, wildlife and contaminated land. This year  CIRIA has launched a wider range of courses. The new training packages now include CDM (The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007), Control of water pollution from construction sites,   Environmental good practice on site and a range of SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) workshops. Each course is offered for individual delegates at CIRIA offices in London and other venues around the country. The training modules are designed for all levels of knowledge from less experienced professionals fairly new to construction through to professionals who have extensive knowledge and experience.
