COASTNET GOOD PRACTICE DIRECTORY:
PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND MARINE EDUCATION

(Posted 8 February 2008)

CoastNet is an international networking organisation. Their mission is to safeguard the world’s coast and those communities of people and wildlife that depend upon it for their future. This Directory has two principle purposes:

  • To provide a catalogue of tried and tested ideas and ativities, which have been successful in engaging the public and raising awareness of coastal issues thus contributing to sustainable management of the coast. This catalogue is intended to be used for adaptation and use elsewhere;
  • To provide a resource for those engaged in marine education both formal and informal as well as links to the marine educators network through contacts provided with each proforma.

The Directory will be continuously updated as new proformas are submitted, and aims to become the definitive source of good practice in public engagement and marine education.

The catalogue is available for download from the CoastNet website:

LIFE AND EUROPE’S WETLANDS - RESTORING A VITAL ECOSYSTEM
European Communities, 2007, ISBN 978-92-79-07617-6, 68 pages
(Posted 8 February 2008)

Wetland ecosystems hold an important part of Europe’s biodiversity. They provide ideal conditions for a vast diversity of habitats and species, and are especially important for birds providing vital nesting and migratory flyway areas. Despite their importance, however, wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate and are among Europe’s most threatened ecosystems. This brochure presents a selection of wetland projects that have received LIFE co-funding since 1992. The majority of case studies focus on the restoration and management of wetlands, while a number also target key wetland species.

Ecology and Society 12 issues 1 and 2, 2007 [online]
(Posted 8 February 2008)

The Ecology and Society Journal provides open access to all of its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Such access is associated with increased readership and increased citation of an author’s work.

This special feature includes the following extensive articles:

  • Social Learning in European River-Basin Management: Barriers and Fostering Mechanisms from 10 River Basins (Mostert, E., C. Pahl-Wostl, Y. Rees, B. Searle, D. Tàbara, and J. Tippett)
  • Illuminating the Possibilities for Social Learning in the Management of Scotland’s Water (Ison, R., and D. Watson)
  • The European Water Framework Directive: How Ecological Assumptions Frame Technical and Social Change (Steyaert, P., and G. Ollivier)
  • Social Learning and Water Resources Management (Pahl-Wostl, C., M. Craps, A. Dewulf, E. Mostert, D. Tabara, and T. Taillieu)
  • Cultural Factors as Co-Determinants of Participation in River Basin Management (Enserink, B., M. Patel, N. Kranz, and J. Maestu)

MERSEY: THE RIVER THAT CHANGED THE WORLD
IAN WRAY AND COLIN MCPHERSON
The Bluecoat Press, 208 pages, ISBN: 1904438555
Publication Date: November 2007
(Posted 17 December 2007)

Mersey: The River that Changed the World is a project that celebrates the River Mersey, and the people whose lives have been entwined with it. The book explores these connections through a series of specially commissioned essays from writers, journalists, and experts in fields as diverse as archaeology, history, music, wildlife, and architecture. It explains how the small town of Warrington helped produce the ideas that shaped the industrial revolution. Looking beyond the obvious, it explores the Mersey’s connections with the rise of rock music, and explains why the estuary is now a nature conservation resource of international importance. It introduces the politics and people who have led more than two decades of a great river clean up campaign, which is still underway. It looks ahead to a fast reviving river, with new opportunities for maritime trade, regeneration and ecological rebirth, alongside a built heritage of national and world importance. An exhibition of photography by Colin McPherson has been touring the Northwest during late 2007 and 2008.
