THE FATE OF PHARMACEUTICALS, PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS (PCP’s) AND ENDOCRINE DISRUPTERS IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT
Leeds
The quality of treated effluents from sewage treatment plants continues to improve and over the past 15 years the concentrations of organic material, suspended solids, ammonia and phosphate have shown large reductions. This in turn has led to improvements in river water quality with increased invertebrate populations leading to more diverse fish stocks. Almost all of the UK river systems report improvements in water quality. However the return of aquatic life means that we are becoming aware of other problems that remain undetected in polluted waters. A wide range of compounds, generically termed pcps (or personal care products) and which include pharmaceuticals, shampoo’s deodorants etc. are routinely found in the influent to sewage treatment plants. This one- day course considers their fate during treatment and their impact on receiving watercourses.

HARMONISING ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS WITH SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL OF RIVER BASINS
Langat Basin, Malaysia
This international symposium is organised by Hydrology for the Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) which is a transdisciplinary initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) led by the International Hydrological Programme (IHP). HELP is creating a new approach to integrated catchment management through the creation of a framework for water law and policy experts, water resource managers and water scientists to work together on water-related problems. This event aims to identify business opportunities for the water sector to integrate into an expanding environmental services industry and in so doing support the expansion of a truly sustainable and diversified water business environment. It will develop the system harmonisation concept which is a strategy to improve cross-organisational communication and system-wide management to improve production and environmental outcomes in a whole of catchment context. The idea behind this concept entails considering urban and rural water systems as an integral part of the catchment landscape as well as the regional economic and governance system.

4TH EUROPEAN WATER AND WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION
Leeds
The theme for this year’s European Water and Waste Management Conference is ‘Reducing the Environmental Footprint of the Water Industry’. Throughout Europe the water industry has made great strides over the past twenty years in treating water and wastewater to the standards required by European legislation. The investment in the infrastructure to achieve this has been vast and it leaves a legacy of asset maintenance to be borne by future generations. Achieving improvements in the quality of potable water and treated effluent comes with an additional cost in that the environmental footprint of these assets is now significant. There are increasingly urgent calls to minimise our carbon emissions and with a rapidly shrinking timeframe to achieve the cuts thought necessary to avert irreversible major global warming. Thus it is timely to examine the contribution of the water industry to GHG emissions and to examine present and future technologies intended to minimise these impact.

12TH IWA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WETLAND SYSTEMS FOR WATER POLLUTION CONTROL
Venice, Italy
Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been adopted by many Italian communities as a cost-effective means of secondary and tertiary wastewater treatment, in order to meet more stringent standards and to lower operating costs. Some small systems have now been in existence for nearly 15 years, while wetland treatment systems for larger towns and small cities have become a more recent trend. Since 1999 CWs have been ‘officially’ recognised as a treatment technology.
Following several positive experiences with municipal and domestic wastewater treatment, there is now an increasing number of projects and realisations of CWs for diffuse pollution, like agricultural runoff, highway and urban runoff (SUDs, CSOs,..), for industrial applications (wineries, landfill leachates, animal breeding,..) and finally for “Ecosan” related facilities (wastewater segregation, reuse,…). The conference is organised by the Italian Section of the IWA Specialist Group on the Use of Macrophytes in Water Pollution Control.
