ESTUARINE & COASTAL SCIENCES ASSOCIATION (ECSA) 2010 SYMPOSIUM 47 Integrative Tools and Methods in Assessing Ecological Quality in Estuarine and Coastal Systems Worldwide
Figueira da Foz, Portugal
IMAR-Institute of Marine Research (U.Coimbra) and CO-Centre of Oceanography (U.Lisbon) will organise this ECSA 47 Symposium. Legislations are under development worldwide (e.g. Oceans Act in USA, Australia or Canada; Water Framework Directive or Marine Strategy in Europe; National Water Act in South Africa, etc.) to address the ecological quality or integrity of estuarine and coastal systems. In spite of the increasing attention that has been paid to the development of tools for different physical, chemical or biological elements of the ecosystems, very few methodologies integrate all the elements into a unique evaluation of a water body. The development of such integrative tools to assess ecosystem quality is therefore of major importance and this ECSA meeting will contribute to provide an overview of the current situation through examples from each of the continents.

WILD AND FARMED FISHERIES – DEBATE “THIS HOUSE BELIEVES UK AQUACULTURE PRODUCTION SHOULD AT LEAST DOUBLE BY 2020”
Fishmongers’ Hall, London
This debate is organised by The Fishmongers’ Company and CIWEM Metropolitan Branch. We are recommended to eat fish regularly because of the associated health benefits but wild fisheries have reached their sustainability limits so future increases in supply will have to come from farmed fish. However, aquaculture can have adverse effects on the environment and on the health of other local fisheries. This one-day event will comprise a series of four debates about each of the main aquaculture sectors (salmon, shellfish, trout and emerging species). Each will have an expert proposer and an opposer. Delegates will be able to join in the debate and to vote on the proposition for each sector and for aquaculture overall.
