IEMA CONFERENCE 2008 Aligning Environmental and Economic Priorities
Bournemouth International Centre
One of the biggest challenges we face is figuring out how to align and resolve environment alongside the economy in a way that respects environmental limits, improves social standards and continues to deliver economic growth. The IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) Conference 2008 will give delegates the opportunity to explore these issues. The event will provide delegates with opportunities to network with fellow professionals and to gain professional contacts. In addition to the plenary speeches and workshop programme the conference includes an exhibition, lunchtime seminar programme, membership surgery sessions, a poster session illustrating good practice case studies and latest research. This year there is a choice of 30 workshops and to help to tailor the conference to suit the delegates’ needs and interests each workshop has been categorised as practitioner level, skills development or a round table discussion. Please note that delegates intending to participate in the round table discussions must be experienced practitioners and willing to contribute to the discussions and debates taking place.

Athens, Greece
This workshop is the first regional workshop of the series run by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and will focus on the specific needs, challenges and capabilities in the Mediterranean region. The workshop aims to enlist strong participation from the countries in northern Africa. Socio-economic issues will remain important in this and subsequent regional workshops (perhaps more important for Africa). Human Activities and their impact on susceptibility to coastal flooding is a key issue.
The workshop will include plenary sessions that focus on identifying and assessing the effectiveness of “best practices”, including the policy infrastructure and decision-making processes that underpin those practices in regions with well developed coastal zone management capacities. The deliberations in these plenary sessions should provide guidance for detailed breakout sessions toward developing an implementation plan to address user needs in the host region, with the development of supporting pilot projects.

INTERNATIONAL EXPO ZARAGOZA 2008 Water And Sustainable Development
Zaragoza, Spain
International Expositions, such as the one planned for Zaragoza in 2008, are held over 3 months on a site of no more than 25 hectares. They address a specific theme, which in this case, is “Water and Sustainable Development”. There are 95 countries already confirmed to appear at Expo 2008. The expo is divided into four sub sections: Water, a unique resource, Water for Life, Waterscapes and Shared Water. Expo Zaragoza hopes to promote thought and deliberation to encourage the exchange of knowledge, in particular with regards to lessons learned, best practices, transferable experiences, innovative projects, and recommendations for action.
The Water Tribune was established specifically to bring together the many concepts and beliefs that exist around water and its management – some of which have been long forgotten – and to formalise these various elements so as to discover or imagine a sustainable way of managing water. The water tribune’s main aim is to spread knowledge through forums and meetings.

BIG JUMP 2005 - 2015 EUROPEAN RIVER SWIMMING DAY
Various
Big Jump is a campaign by European Rivers Network (ERN). The ‘Big Jump’ project includes numerous actions, like the organisation of a series of transboundary swimming days on different European water basins. Everybody swims in the rivers the same day, at the same hour, in European rivers, from the sources and the glaciers to the oceans. If swimming or jumping in the river is not possible, other events can be organised to celebrate the river. Educational events on the theme of water quality or river restoration are always held during these events. The Big Jump aims at reconciliation of people with their rivers. Reconciliation is an essential element to gain people’s support to the big European restoration effort for rivers and wetlands, expressed in the EU WFD. The project will culminate in 2010 and 2015 with the European River Swimming Day on all the big river basins or stretches where the quality standard has been reached. During the interim years 2006 - 2009 intermediary Big Jumps are organised on regional or basin wide scale.

iEMSs 2008 International Conference on Environmental Modelling and Software
Barcelona, Catalonia
The congress, organised by the International Environmental Modelling & Software Society (iEMSs), joins together several interest groups working in different but complementary features and/or scientific fields in Environmental Modelling, Assessment, Decision Making and Information Technologies. This time, the focus will be stressed on Integrating Sciences and Information Technology for Environmental Assessment and Decision Making. The congress will be built around three complementary tracks of plenary sessions, sessions and workshops.
The congress will run Thematic Workshops in parallel with Sessions. In particular, the W6 Workshop Integrated solution support systems for water management is linked with the S6 Session: Integrated Catchment Management: How can modelling tools and techniques help?

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SEDIMENT MANAGEMENT, I2SM
Lille, France
For many decades, waterways have been exposed to a wide variety of contaminants. Even if regulations and a better control of contaminants have been established to reduce their emission, many contaminants are still present in bottom sediments.
The symposium will review recent advances on sediments management related research and focus on engineering aspects. It will provide an opportunity for experts and engineers all over the world to meet and share their experience.
The first circular calls for paper on the following main topics:
- Management of dredging operation and storage of sediments
- Treatments of contaminated sediments
- Transport of contaminants
- Ecotoxicological approaches and developments of biotests
- Analyses and water treatments
- Beneficial uses of dredging marine and river sediments in civil engineering
- Other beneficial uses in other fields.

IWA DIPCOM 2008 The 12th International Conference on Integrated Diffuse Pollution Management
Khon Kaen, Thailland
The conference will aim to coordinate and share the information in the various aspects on diffuse pollution with the focus on integrated diffuse pollution management. The conference will be a place for developing the knowledge of diverse groups of researchers and participants, each with a critical stake in diffuse pollution, abatement and integrated management.
It also provides opportunities for individuals spanning a broad scope which are engineers, hydrologists, biologists, ecologists, economists, attorneys, public officials, and governmental planners among them to present innovative idea and experiences to better understand and achieve the sustainable environmental management through integrated diffuse pollution management program. The conference will be scoped on diffuse/non-point sources pollution, soil and surface water/groundwater contamination, estimation of pollution loads, measurement and monitoring methods and impact on receiving environmental receptors.
