Irish Sea Project

The UK Government Review of Marine Nature Conservation (http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-1604) set up the Irish Sea Pilot project in 2002 to test the potential for an ecosystem approach to managing the marine environment at a regional sea scale. The Irish Sea area was selected for the Pilot because it was considered to be one of the most ecologically-distinct regional seas around the UK. Its semi-enclosed geography and range of stakeholders and activities makes it perhaps the most recognisable and distinct of the regional seas.

From the analysis of the state-of-the-art of current practices in coastal erosion prevention and management at various levels, a shoreline management guide of practical examples from all over Europe has been produced, highlighting the weaknesses and strengths from technical, economical, and social points of view. The project was completed in 2004.
