CONSULTATION: PROMOTING AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO MANAGEMENT OF THE COASTAL ZONE (ICZM) IN ENGLAND Defra is seeking views on how to best promote and implement an integrated approach to the management of the coastal zone (ICZM) in England. Government is currently taking action in a number of areas, which have raised the profile of marine and coastal issues. This action includes the publication of new guidance on shoreline management planning, reviews of land use planning guidance and the marine historic environment, the development of River Basin Management Plans under the Water Framework Directive and consultation on initial proposals for a Marine Bill. Government is considering how an integrated approach to coastal management can be incorporated into all of these activities. The closing date for responses is Friday 8 September 2006. The full text of the consultation can be found on the Defra website: WATER EFFICIENCY AWARDS 2007 The Environment Agency has announced the launch of the Water Efficiency Awards 2007 which recognise organisations that cut down on the water they use, helping to conserve our country’s precious water resources. Leading by example, these organisations show what water efficiency means in practice, and how water-saving schemes make good financial sense. There are seven categories, from which an overall winner is selected. Completed entry forms must be returned by 31 August 2006. To register interest in the 2007 Awards email Paula Wood: DASSH, DATA ARCHIVE FOR SEABED SPECIES AND HABITATS The Marine Biological Association (MBA) is developing the DASSH with funding from Defra. DASSH is built on the existing extensive data and dissemination skills of the Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN) alongside the library skills experience of the National Marine Biological Library (NMBL) and the MBA’s historical role in marine science. DASSH will safeguard marine benthic survey data (past and future) and make that data available as a national information resource to support marine science and better stewardship of the marine environment. For details see the DASSH website: SUBMISSIONS ON DRAFT UKTAG ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS & CONDITIONS REPORT (SR1 – 2006) Comments on UKTAG’s proposals for UK environmental standards and conditions are now available. UKTAG is presently collating a summary of the significant issues. A summary of the outcome and UKTAG’s response should be posted on their website later this summer:
